Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to maintain and/or obtain an erection firm enough for satisfying sexual activity. According to studies, ED is common affecting approximately 30 million men in the United States. Despite how common it is, ED remains a difficult topic to discuss with partners, friends, and even medical providers, often negatively impacting a person's mental health and relationships. This pressure to perform, coupled with the anxiety of a partner who feels that they are no longer desired, can make ED worse and ultimately results in mental-health problems and potnetially the end of a relationship. This is why not only is it important to understand what causes ED but also that it has a major psychological component. By treating ED we are not just trying to improve a physiological process, we are also trying to improve a man’s mental health and his attitude and approach towards sex.

Some physical issues that can cause erectile dysfunction include low testosterone, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tobacco use, alcohol use, prescription medications, and thyroid disorders.
Psychological causes can include stress, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and other mental health conditions. Underlying disease processes such as diabetes and atherosclerosis can cause vascular issues that inhibit blood flow and neurological causes affecting nerve signals. Eliminating risk factors such as no exercise, poor diet, and smoking can prevent these things from causing erectile dysfunction.
